XML Sitemap Generator
Paste a list of URLs and get a standards-compliant sitemap.xml — validated, de-duplicated and properly escaped — ready to download and upload.
Optionally add a date after a URL (YYYY-MM-DD), separated by a comma or space.
How to use the XML Sitemap Generator
List your URLs
One per line — from your CMS, a spreadsheet or a crawl. Optionally add a date after each URL.
Choose lastmod
Use your own dates where you have accurate ones, or leave lastmod out.
Review the checks
Fix skipped lines and remove URLs that redirect, are noindex or duplicate.
Download and submit
Upload sitemap.xml, add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in search engine webmaster tools.
What it checks
- URL validity
- Each line must be an absolute http(s) URL; others are skipped and listed.
- Duplicates
- Repeated URLs (ignoring #fragments) are listed once.
- Dates
- lastmod values must be W3C dates such as 2026-09-01.
- Hosts
- A warning when URLs come from more than one host.
- Limits
- 50,000 URLs and 50 MB uncompressed per sitemap file.
- Escaping
- &, <, >, quotes and apostrophes in URLs are escaped so the XML stays valid.
Interpreting the results
The summary shows how many URLs made it into the sitemap, how many lines were skipped and why, how many duplicates were removed and the file size. The output follows the sitemaps.org protocol: a UTF-8 urlset with one <url> per page.
Optional changefreq and priority fields are supported, but Google has said it ignores them, so they're off by default. lastmod is useful only when it's accurate.

Practical guidance
A sitemap should list the URLs you want indexed — canonical, indexable pages that return 200 — and nothing else. Including redirects, noindexed pages or parameter duplicates sends mixed signals. Before generating, run your list through the HTTP Status Code Checker (10 at a time) or your crawler's export.
Example: a small business pastes 40 URLs from a spreadsheet. The tool skips two with typos (htps://), removes three duplicates and warns that one URL uses www. while the rest don't — worth fixing before search engines see it.
A sitemap helps discovery, not ranking. Internal links and relevant external links are what signal which pages matter — see link building fundamentals and our backlink packages. Validate an existing sitemap with the XML Sitemap Validator, and reference it from robots.txt with the Robots.txt Generator.
Limitations
- It doesn't crawl your site — you supply the URL list.
- It can't tell whether each URL is indexable, canonical or returns 200.
- It creates standard URL sitemaps only; image, video, news and sitemap index files aren't generated.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool crawl my website?
No. It builds a sitemap from the URLs you paste. That keeps it fast and private.
Should I include changefreq and priority?
They're optional. Google has said it ignores them.
What's the maximum size?
50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed per sitemap. Larger sites use several sitemaps and a sitemap index.
Should lastmod be today's date?
Only if the page really changed today. Accurate dates are more useful than inflated ones.
