What link building is
Link building is the work of getting other websites to link to yours. Some of that happens on its own when people find your content useful; link building is the deliberate part — creating the conditions for links, or arranging them directly.
It's one part of search engine optimisation, alongside the content on your pages and the technical health of your site. It works best when those other parts are already in reasonable shape.
Why links matter
Search engines use links as one of many signals about which pages are relevant and trustworthy for a topic. A link from a relevant page is, loosely, a reference: someone else considered your page worth pointing to. Links also help search engines discover pages and understand what they're about, partly through the anchor text used.
Links aren't the only thing that matters, and they don't guarantee outcomes. A page with weak content or technical problems won't be rescued by links alone. Our guide What is a backlink? covers the basic mechanism.
Earned and built links
It helps to separate two ways links arrive:
- Earned links come from people who choose to reference your content without being asked or paid. They follow useful resources, original data, tools and strong brands.
- Built links are arranged: through outreach, guest articles, paid placements, link insertions or networks under someone's control.
Search engine guidelines treat these very differently. Links arranged primarily to influence rankings — including paid links and PBN links — fall outside those guidelines. That's a real consideration and part of the decision to use them, not a detail to ignore.
The main link types
| Type | How it works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PBN backlinks | Links on sites controlled by one network operator | High control; guideline risk |
| Guest posts | New articles on independent sites | Independence; slower, less control |
| Niche edits | Links added to existing articles | Established pages; limited wording |
| Digital PR & earned links | Coverage earned through newsworthy content | Credible; unpredictable |
Most healthy link profiles combine several sources. See Guest posts vs PBN links for a closer comparison of the two most common built types.
Principles that hold across every type
- Relevance first. A link should make sense in its context at site, page, paragraph and anchor level. See Link relevance.
- Contextual placement. Links in body content carry more editorial meaning than template links. See Contextual backlinks explained.
- Varied, honest anchors. A natural profile mixes branded, generic, URL, partial and exact anchors. There's no universal correct ratio. See What is anchor text?
- Plausible pacing. Steady growth resembles real link acquisition more than sudden spikes. See How to build a natural backlink profile.
- Quality over count. A handful of relevant links usually matters more than many irrelevant ones. See How many backlinks does a website need?
Prepare the pages first
Before pointing links at a page, check that it can benefit from them:
- It returns a 200 status and isn't redirected — check with the HTTP status code checker, which also shows any redirect chain.
- It's indexable and has a sensible canonical — check with the canonical checker or meta tag analyzer.
- It has a clear heading structure and covers its topic well — the heading structure analyzer helps.
- It's linked from elsewhere on your own site, so it isn't orphaned — the internal link & anchor text analyzer shows how a page links to the rest of your site.
Understanding risk
Every built link carries some risk, and the level depends on the method and how it's done. Heavy exact-match anchors, sudden volume, irrelevant hosts and obvious networks are the patterns most likely to cause problems. No provider can make built links risk-free, and claims of "safe", "undetectable" or "guaranteed" links deserve scepticism.
