PBN & Link Networks

How PBN Backlinks Work

The mechanical, step-by-step version — from a network operator's site to a link showing up on your target page.

The starting point

A PBN link starts with a network: a set of websites, each with its own domain, hosting, and content, all controlled by the same operator. See What Is a PBN? if you haven't already, for how that network typically gets built in the first place.

A PBN link is one of several ways a link can reach your target page.
  1. You (or a service acting for you) identify a target page and keyword that needs support.
  2. A site in the network is chosen because its existing topic and content genuinely relate to that target page — not picked at random from whatever's available.
  3. A link is added into either an existing piece of content on that network site or a newly written one, using anchor text agreed on beforehand.
  4. The page is published or updated, and the link becomes live and crawlable.
  5. Once a search engine crawls the network site again, it discovers the link as part of that page's normal content.

What makes the mechanism work at all

From a search engine's perspective, a well-run network site is indistinguishable from any other independent website: it has its own hosting, its own design, and genuine content a visitor could actually read and find useful. The link inside it is just one more outbound link on a normal-looking page. The mechanism only works as intended when the network site holds up to that same scrutiny a real website would — which is why hosting diversity and genuine content matter as much as they do.

What can go wrong

A poorly built network undermines itself in identifiable ways: shared hosting across many sites, identical templates, thin or absent content, and link patterns that only make sense if the sites are connected. Any one of these narrows the gap between "looks like an independent site" and "looks like a manufactured network," which is the entire risk profile of this link type — covered honestly in What Is a PBN?.

How this looks in practice

When you order a PBN placement from us, steps 2 through 4 above happen on our side, and we confirm the anchor text and context with you before step 4. You receive the live URL once it's published, so you're never taking step 5 on faith. Full detail on ordering is on our PBN Link Building service page.

Signs a network site is well maintained

If you're assessing a PBN placement — from us or anyone else — the host site should hold up to the same look a reader would give any website:

  • A clear topic, visible from its homepage and categories.
  • Articles written for readers, with a reasonable range of subjects within that topic.
  • Outbound links that aren't all commercial and aren't all exact-match anchors.
  • Its own design and hosting, rather than a template shared with many sibling sites.
  • Pages that are indexable and internally linked, not orphaned.

You can check the last point on any specific page with our free meta tag analyzer and internal link & anchor text analyzer.

Questions to ask any PBN provider

  1. How do you choose which site my link goes on?
  2. Will the link be in body content, and can I see the article?
  3. Who decides the anchor text, and will you flag over-optimisation?
  4. Can placements be matched to my country and language?
  5. What do I receive as proof of delivery?
  6. What do you say about risk? (Be wary of anyone who says there is none.)

Our answers are on the PBN backlinks page.
