Meta Description Checker
Paste one meta description or a whole list. Each is measured in characters and approximate pixels, shown with its likely cut-off, and checked for keyword use, problematic characters and duplicates.
How to use the Meta Description Checker
Paste descriptions
One per line. A crawl export or CMS listing is the fastest source for a whole site.
Add a focus keyword (optional)
Search engines often bold words matching the query, so it's useful to see whether the topic appears.
Pick a width budget
Desktop snippets are roughly two lines; mobile snippets can be a little longer.
Rewrite flagged rows
Start with empty and duplicate descriptions, then long ones that bury the key message.
What it checks
- Length
- Characters, words and approximate pixel width in Arial 14px, with a result preview when you check a single description.
- Visible portion
- The text likely to appear before an ellipsis within the chosen budget.
- Keyword use
- Whether the focus keyword appears, and whether it's in the first half.
- Characters
- Double quotes (which can break the HTML attribute if not escaped), line breaks, emoji and repeated punctuation.
- Too short
- Descriptions under about 70 characters that may not summarise the page.
- Duplicates
- Identical descriptions across the list, ignoring case and spacing.
Interpreting the results
Each row gets a status and short notes. Fix means empty, duplicated or far beyond the width budget; Check means worth a look — slightly long, very short, missing the keyword or containing risky characters; OK means none of those checks were triggered.
The meta description isn't generally treated as a direct ranking factor, and search engines often write their own snippet from page text when it better matches a query. A good description still matters: when it's used, it's your chance to tell searchers what they'll get.
Detected marks facts read directly from what you provided. Guidance marks general recommendations based on those facts — rules of thumb, not guarantees or search engine requirements.
Practical guidance
Treat the description as a short pitch for the page: what it covers, who it's for and one concrete detail. “Compare 12 timber and metal sheds from 6×4 to 10×8, with base and planning advice” gives a searcher far more than “We sell the best sheds at great prices”. Put the most important information in the first half, since that part survives truncation on every device.
Duplicate descriptions are the most common site-wide issue — usually a template or plugin default. Fixing them for your most important pages first is a sensible use of time. The same “specific beats generic” rule applies to link placements: an article that clearly states its topic is a stronger home for a contextual backlink.
Pair this with the Title Tag Checker, preview both together in the SERP Snippet Preview, and read Link relevance for how page topic and links fit together.
Limitations
- Pixel widths are approximations measured with Arial in your browser.
- It can't tell you whether a search engine will use your description or generate its own snippet.
- Keyword matching is exact-phrase only; related terms and plurals aren't matched.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a meta description be?
There's no fixed limit. Desktop snippets typically show around 150–160 characters, but it's width that matters. Put the key message first.
Do I need a description for every page?
For important pages, yes. For very large sites, prioritise templates and key pages; search engines will generate snippets for the rest.
Why are double quotes flagged?
In HTML the description sits inside content="…". An unescaped double quote ends the attribute early and cuts the description off.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All checks run in your browser.
